PARKOUR, FIVE KEY THINGS YOU NEED TO KNOW

13/10/2017

Parkour is an urban discipline that emerged in France about thirty years ago, with its origins attributed to David Belle. It draws its inspiration from the “parcours du combatant” (the fighter’s course) which is the training track or course used by the military.  It has recently become recognized as a street culture phenomenon.

Here are the 5 key things to know if you want to begin practising this gripping and adrenaline-pumping sport.

Objectives

Parkour is used to move quickly and smoothly through the urban jungle, starting from a point A to get to a point B using only your body and elements of the surrounding environment.

Training

To practice this sport in absolute safety it’s advisable to keep fit and boost your physical strength, since a “Traceur” (a person who practices this discipline) really has nothing but his own body to rely on.

Recognize your limits (to then overcome them!)

A Traceur is constantly up against challenges that go beyond the limits of physical preparation. You therefore need to know your own body and mind to avoid injuries and risks. This knowledge helps you to overcome your fear and win the battle with yourself.

Clothing

A Traceur’s clothing is very simple, consisting of comfortable clothes like joggers and a t-shirt. And the most important thing? Your shoes! They must be comfortable, securely tied and with a good grip on the asphalt to avoid falls or slips.

Spots

A “spot” is a particular place in the city where it’s easy to create courses and jump with ease. Try looking around the areas of your town, you’ll discover a new way of experiencing the street!
