10 SPORTS FILMS NOT TO BE MISSED

27/03/2020

Films about sport have something of a unique appeal that makes them irresistible.  They tell gripping stories of revenge and the rise and – sometimes – the fall of champions. It makes little difference whether they are based on true stories or fantasy: films telling the tales of great champions always give you the urge to raise your game and never give up!

Here are 10 sports films not to be missed!

Cinderella Man (2005)

Based on the true-life story of the boxer Jim Braddock who, during the Great Depression, tried his luck with boxing to be able to feed his family.

Hoosiers (1986)

Old timer Norman Dale accepts an offer by a friend, head of a college in the Indiana town of Hickory, to coach its basketball team. Dale leads the team from game to game to eventually become winners, even conquering the regional championship in front of twenty thousand spectators.

Goal! The Dream Begins (2005)

Like millions of youngsters around the world, Santiago dreams of becoming a professional footballer. But in view of his origins and his situation – he lives in a poor neighbourhood of Los Angeles – he has no hope of this dream becoming reality. But nobody should ever despair…

Remember the Titans (2000)

Alexandria, Virginia in the early 1970s: two schools merge to become the T.C. Williams High School and the football team’s coach is replaced by Afro-American Herman Boone. Tensions mount between players of different racial origin who, for the first time, find themselves in the same team. To help them learn to live together and discover what they have in common, the coach takes them to a training ground in Gettysburg, Pennsylvania. But when the boys return to Alexandria they find the city gripped by unrest.

Lagaan: Once Upon a Time in India (2001)

It is 1893, in an India devastated by drought and under the oppression of the British Raj. Peasants in the village of Champaner, led by the young Bhuvan (the Indian actor Aamir Khan), challenge the British – led by Captain Russell (Paul Blackthorne) – to a game of cricket.

Moneyball (2011)

Recruited as general manager of the Oakland Athletics baseball team, Billy Beane tries to use sophisticated computerised statistical analysis to discover the best players to sign and play in order to return to winning ways.

Million Dollar Baby (2004)

Raging Bull (1980)

Dramatised by Paul Schrader and Mardik Martin on the basis of an autobiography, this is the story of world middleweight champion Jake La Motta, known as “the Bronx Bull” for his raging ability to give and above all to absorb punches. He won the title in 1949 against Marcel Cerdan and lost it to Ray Sugar Robinson on 14 February, 1951.

Rocky (1976)

Rocky Balboa lives in Philadelphia and works as a debt-collector for an Italian-American moneylender, also winning some small fights as an amateur boxer. Helped by a wise coach and inspired by his love for Adriana and a prize of $150,000, he accepts a challenge from black heavyweight champion Apollo Creed – hoping not to win but to go the distance to the 15th round.

Rush (2013)

Set in the golden age of Formula 1, RUSH portrays the stirring real-life story of two of the greatest rivals the world has ever seen: the stylish British playboy James Hunt and his methodical and brilliant opponent, Niki Lauda. Taking its cue from their personal lives both on and off the race track, RUSH follows the two drivers as they push the limits of physical and psychological endurance, with no short-cut to victory and no room for error.
