For many people the arrival of summer means just one thing: long bike rides! But when the weather doesn’t cooperate, a great way to ward off your disappointment is to watch a good movie about your favourite sport!
We’ve selected 3 films and TV miniseries about the greats of Italian cycling, to experience all the excitement that only this sport can give!
- The Legend of the Bandit and the Champion. Set in the 1920s, this features the meeting of Costante Girardengo, the first campionissimo in the history of Italian cycling, and Sante Pollastri, his childhood friend and now a bandit wanted by the police in Italy and France. Their destinies intertwined in Paris, after many years, before a decisive race. Beppe Fiorello and Simone Gandolfo play the lead parts in this miniseries that tells of two aspiring champions that life has cruelly separated.
- Gino Bartali: the timeless champion. The life of the timeless Gino Bartali and his personal and sporting ups and downs, from his beginnings in the world of cycling, the death of his brother Giulio, his victory in the first Giro d ‘Italia and, above all, his eternal rivalry with Fausto Coppi, in this Rai-produced miniseries. With a moving performance by Pierfrancesco Favino as Gino Bartali.
- The Pirate-Marco Pantani. Rolando Ravello plays Marco Pantani in this film made in 2007, a few years after the cyclist’s death. A life marked by incredible victories but also many darker moments.
And, as an extra treat for anyone who wants a touch of light-heartedness and comedy, a classic of Italian cinema. The great Totò alongside the champions of the time in Totò at the Giro d’Italia.
