ALL VINCENZO’S NUMBERS

The analysis of  Vincenzo Nibali Milano Sanremo

The analysis of Nibali’s THRILLING victory at the Milan – Sanremo shows that, when we’re talking about certain champions, it’s a pleasure to see how slow we are in comparison!
On the Cipressa climb Nibali clocked a time of 10’29” – an average speed of 32.2 km/h and a VAM of 1291 m/h. We’ve tried to calculate his average Watts figure, which emerges as 456 at 7.02 W/kg based on Nibali’s weight of 65 kg (source: Procyclingstats).

We know, however, that it is impossible to quantify the exact power emission due to the group slipstream effect.
The Strava KOM award, however, goes to that old wolf Greg Van Avermaet on March 18, 2017, when he climbed at an average of 556 Watts for 9’46”.
We arrive at the Poggio: after the turning that marks the beginning of the climb, Nibali hears Slongo singing “You didn’t do anything to me” by Ermal Meta and Fabrizio Moro on the radio (a premonition? I don’t believe it!), and promptly unleashes all his creativity with an attack that will remain engraved in the annals of cycling. He clocks 6’05” at 36.3 km/hwith 557 Watts and 8.57 W/kg.
The KOM award, however, belongs to Michal Kwiatkowski, again achieved in 2017, at the precise moment that his power gauge went crazy, partly for the numbers and partly for the contractions of Sagan’s quadriceps. His time was 5’47”, his average Watts 607 and his 8.94 Watts/kg.
Just one sour note regards our own Vincenzo, with not even one Strava KOM in 298 km – which was the real reason for his power burst on the Poggio. Let’s start all over again, see you in 2019!
