Adrenaline in the Water: discovering Swimrun and Canyoning for an Extreme Summer

26/05/2026

Summer is not just synonymous with relaxing under a beach umbrella. For lovers of the outdoors and high-heart-rate challenges, the warmest months represent the perfect time to turn water into their playground. Moving away from classic trekking routes or traditional cycling outings, two disciplines emerge that are capable of combining the energy of untouched nature with an exceptional physical commitment: Canyoning and Swimrun.

Let’s discover what makes these two extreme water sports unique and how to best prepare to face them.

Canyoning: Exploration and Primordial Contact with Nature

Known in Italy also as torrentismo, Canyoning is the purest expression of outdoor exploration. It is not a race against the clock or against other opponents, but a true immersive journey inside deep gorges, ravines, and canyons carved by water over millennia.

Practicing canyoning means following the flow of the stream. Hikers descend into the valley by alternating between different techniques:

  • Walking and swimming in crystal-clear pools of water.

  • Sliding down natural “toboggans” of polished rock.

  • Adrenaline-fueled jumps and abseiling (rappelling) directly under roaring waterfalls.

It is an activity that offers a primordial contact with nature, taking athletes into environments that would otherwise be inaccessible, where rock, shade, and freezing water create a fascinating and challenging ecosystem.

Swimrun: the Continuous Competitive Challenge

If canyoning is exploration, Swimrun is pure competition and resilience. Born almost as a bet in Sweden, this endurance sport is rapidly conquering thousands of athletes across Europe. The premise is simple yet brutal: continuously alternating sections of trail running on dirt paths with open-water swimming sections (seas or lakes).

Unlike triathlon or aquathlon, there are no transition zones in Swimrun. There is only one golden rule: you cross the finish line with the exact same equipment you started with. This means that athletes must:

  • Swim with their running shoes on.

  • Run with their wetsuit on.

Today, Swimrun boasts a prestigious world circuit, the pinnacle of which is the legendary ÖTILLÖ race in the Stockholm archipelago. However, it is also booming in Italy, with spectacular competitions crossing the great northern lakes and marine coasts, putting the physical and mental endurance of participants to the test.

Fun Facts Between Waves and Rocks: did you know that…?

Behind the fatigue and adrenaline, these water disciplines hide fascinating stories and characteristics:

A bet that ended up (literally) in the sea: Swimrun was not born in a sports science laboratory, but at a bar table! In 2002, in Sweden, four friends made a lighthearted, alcohol-fueled bet: to challenge each other to cross the Stockholm archipelago by swimming and running from one island to another. The agreement stated that the losers would pay for the restaurant, the hotel, and the drinks at the end of the race. From that crazy idea, a world championship and one of the fastest-growing outdoor sports globally were born.

The invisible architecture of nature: Canyoning is not just an extreme sport, but a true speleological journey. Many ravines, rocky gorges, and pools into which you descend are literally “invisible” and unreachable from classic hiking trails. Those who practice canyoning have the privilege of exploring hidden ecosystems and admiring secret waterfalls that most tourists will never know exist.

The extreme summer is calling. Whether it is for the thrill of competition or the simple desire to experience nature from an unprecedented (and very fresh) perspective, the water is waiting to give you an extraordinary adventure.
