AUTUMN ON A MOTORBIKE: 5 ITINERARIES IN ITALY ON TWO WHEELS

16/10/2024

With the arrival of autumn, the temptation to put our bike in the garage, and await the return of the summer, is super-strong. However, there are several routes that can be followed on a motorbike in autumn, offering incredible views and glimpses thanks to the typical colours of this season.

The advice is to cover up well, choosing clothing suitable for the coldest temperatures felt on the bike, wearing appropriate protection, studying an itinerary, checking the weather and setting off to discover incredible places.

Here are 5 suggestions of Italian itineraries to travel by motorcycle between October and November.

LANGHE, PIEDMONT

Located in the province of Cuneo, in Piedmont, the Langhe area has been named a UNESCO World Heritage Site and is an unmissable route for passionate motorcyclists. Aba, Bra, Barolo, and Barbaresco are just some of the villages where a stop is a must, both to admire the wonderful wine-growing landscapes of Piedmont, and to take a break in one of the many restaurants and characteristic agritourisms in the area.

LAKE MAGGIORE, PIEDMONT, LOMBARDY AND SWITZERLAND

Lake Maggiore is undoubtedly one of the most beautiful Italian lakes, nestled between Piedmont, Lombardy and Switzerland. The area is full of villages, islands and landscapes leaving visitors spoilt for choice and, touring it by motorbike is certainly the best way to appreciate all its wonders. Getting around Lake Maggiore is relatively easy although quite challenging in terms of duration. It is in fact a ring route of about 250 km that crosses enchanting villages and landscapes. In the colder months, in the morning the Piedmontese shore will be illuminated by the sun, in the afternoon it will be the turn of the Lombard shore.

CINQUE TERRE, LIGURIA

It may not be the easiest route to do on a motorbike but it is certainly the one with the most beautiful views. From La Spezia to Levanto, it stretches for about 40 km, touching the 5 villages that form the Cinque Terre: Corniglia, Manarola, Monterosso, Riomaggiore, Vernazza. There are two route options: admire the Cinque Terre from above or, instead, make your way through the villages. The second option will take a little more time because you will need to enter each village and stop for a while, even if only to get lost in the narrow streets and viewpoints overlooking the sea.

VAL D’ORCIA, TUSCANY

Located in the province of Siena, almost on the border with Umbria, Val d ‘Orcia is a real jewel of central Italy. Villages such as Castiglione d ‘Orcia, San Quirico d ‘Orcia, Montalcino, Radicofani and Pienza are part of the Val d ‘Orcia Natural and Cultural Artistic Park. The best way to discover the beauties of this area is to take a few days and walk along the narrow streets that cross the hills, reaching the villages without haste, to fully enjoy the unique landscape of this area.

BOLOGNESE HILLS, EMILIA ROMANGNA

The Italian band Lunapop sang it: “[…] But how nice it is to take a trip in the hills of Bologna […]”. And if your bike is a motorbike even more so! With winding roads running through vineyards, medieval villages and breathtaking landscapes, the Bolognese Hills are a must-see destination for lovers of motorcycle travel. Green, bucolic landscapes, open-air museums, historic villas to visit and unforgettable food and wine experiences are just some of the aspects worth getting on the saddle for.
