DISCOVERING TENERIFE BETWEEN TREKKING, SURFING AND EXCURSIONS

19/08/2024

Also known as the island of eternal spring, Tenerife is located in the Atlantic Ocean off northwest Africa and is one of the Spanish islands that make up the Canary Islands.

Characterised by a mild climate all year round, Tenerife is of volcanic origin and features a variety of surprising landscapes. A place where you can alternate days of mountain excursions, trekking and surfing, all accompanied by the ever-present wind typical of the island.

But what unmissable experiences should you make sure you do when you arrive in Tenerife? Here are just a few of them.

TEIDE NATIONAL PARK

Mount Teide (3715 m high) is the third highest volcano in the world and the highest peak of all the Canary Islands and Spain. Located within the Teide National Park, this volcano offers many unmissable opportunities to enjoy incredible landscapes, which can make you forget that you are on an island in the Ocean.

You can drive through the entire National Park on paved roads, seeing sights characterised by volcanic landscapes, forests and peaks sure to take your breath away. Along the way, there are several paths and trails of varying lengths and difficulties that give you the opportunity to enter the Park and discover its wonders up close.

Every day, by booking online, you can ride on the funicular railway that runs from the bottom to the top of the Teide volcano. The journey takes just 8 minutes and from the top you can enjoy a unique bird’s-eye view, above the clouds. Several routes start from the summit, shorter than those present downstream, because the stay at the top is limited to about two hours.

SURFING IN EL MÉDANO

You can’t visit Tenerife or the Canary Islands without experiencing the thrill that only surfing can offer. Most of the beaches on the island are characterised by waves ideal for surfing but there is a small village particularly suitable for those trying this sport for the first time, in total safety.

El Médano is located south of Tenerife and has been renamed the paradise of water sports. Surf, kite and windsurf schools are dotted all the way along the beach, for visitors who want to take lessons or simply rent equipment.

The wide and sandy beach, the shallow seabed, the perfect but not too high waves and the ever-present wind make El Médano beach the perfect place for those who love water sports, from the most experienced enthusiasts to absolute beginners.

THE MOST BEAUTIFUL BEACHES IN TENERIFE

Whatever point you decide to visit, Tenerife offers priceless landscapes and views.

Green mountains and valleys, desert expanses of land and sand, cactus forests, wonderful coves and villages and trails to discover.

But what are the most beautiful coves and beaches? Here are four you can’t afford to miss.

Playa La Tejita and the Motaña Roja

A long sandy beach near El Médano, overlooked by the famous Montaña Roja (at an altitude of 171 m). The area is classified as a Special Nature Reserve and the sandy and somewhat isolated beach allows sea lovers to enjoy the crystal clear waters of the ocean in total tranquility. Visitors can walk and trek up the slopes of the Montaña Roja volcano to reach the top and enjoy a breathtaking view.

Playa Diego Hernandez

Located in the municipality of Adeje, Playa Diego Hernandez is one of the wildest, most beautiful and unspoilt beaches on the island. Its crystal clear waters and golden sand make it a real paradise hidden between two rocky inlets. When the wind blows and the waves rise, the wildest vein of the island emerges, spectacular and surprising. Like all hidden coves, Playa Hernandez is reached through a path that is a rather long but not too difficult.

Playa Amarilla

A cove with exotic vibes surrounded by yellowish rocks with an unusual shape, dug out by the waves. A perfect place to snorkel when the sea is calm or to admire the power of the Ocean when the wind rises.

Playa de Benijo

Located in the Anaga Rural Park, in the north-east of Tenerife, this beach offers an extremely striking view of the Ocean. The dark sand of volcanic origin and the rocks that come out of the water undoubtedly make it one of the mandatory stops when you arrive on the island.
