GRANFONDO. 5 TIPS TO SUCCESSFULLY PREPARE FOR YOUR FIRST RACE
It’s time for Gran Fondo. At this time of the year lots of bike and MTB competitions take place all over Italy, attracting large numbers of participants and enthusiasts.
Gran Fondo races are unmissable events for cycling enthusiasts because they put athletes to the test, stretching their limits and giving them the chance to experience the excitement of competing for a day.
If you haven’t yet experienced the thrill of starting a race, here are 5 tips to successfully prepare for and tackle your first Gran Fondo.
- Set a target. First of all, it’s important to decide where you want to finish. Do you just want to reach the finish line without injury, do you have your eyes on the podium, or do you want to set a maximum time for completing the race? Once you’ve defined your goal it will be easier to start preparing accordingly.
- Training plan. It’s essential to prepare your body for the competition. It’s best to follow a balanced training plan that includes non-cycling exercises to strengthen the muscles, alternating these with outings on the bike to “test the ground” and improve your pedalling action and endurance. Before a Gran Fondo it’s a good idea to try out the route so you know what to expect in the race.
- Clothing. The golden rule is: just a few light, breathable and insulating layers. Therefore go for technical clothing that fits close to the body and accommodates its movements. It’s generally a good idea to choose waterproof equipment that gives protection from the rain while at the same time allowing the skin to breathe. A helmet and sunglasses to protect the eyes are obligatory.
- A balanced diet. This is advisable whether you’re competing in sports or not. But even more so if you’re planning to take part in a race: the correct diet plays a crucial role in terms of performance and fitness, also giving you energy and “fuel”.
- Have fun and enjoy the experience.Whether this is your first Gran Fondo or you’re an experienced competitor, the watchword is fun! Competing in a Gran Fondo is a fantastic experience for lovers of cycling: enjoy every moment to the full! Don’t arrive at the race location at the last minute, but a couple of days in advance. That way you can chat to other competitors and prepare your bike properly for the race. Have your photo taken at the finish and treasure the memory of a unique experience!
