THE 10 GOLDEN RULES FOR TREKKERS

22/06/2021

Trekking is all about being immersed in the unspoiled beauty of nature discovering new and unexplored places. From the mountains to the coasts, from the countryside to urban centres.

Whether you’re on your very first experience or are an expert trekker, here are 10 useful tips for trekking safely while having fun!

  1. Your rucksack

Vitally important in any trek. It needs to be carefully chosen and meticulously prepared. It must be suitable for your intended route and comfortable to wear without causing excessive strain.

  1. Your shoes

For a short day trek without any particularly technical parts of the route you can choose a fast, comfortable and lightweight hiking shoe, particularly recommended in hot summer temperatures. If you’re planning a multi-day or more a complex trek, on the other hand, you’re best off going for specific trekking boots to provide all the protection and support you need.

  1. GPS, map and compass

More traditionalist trekkers opt for an orienteering approach using a map and compass. The technologically-minded use GPS. Whatever you do it’s always best to take all the equipment you need to avoid getting lost on trails and to help you look for a refuge, water source and emergency short-cut in the event of an accident.

  1. Don’t forget water…

Always carry plenty of water with you. If you don’t hydrate properly your mind and muscles are unable to function well. Drinking plenty also protects against sudden changes in temperature, pressure and altitude-related problems.

  1. … and food supplies

Nutritious and light foods, to tackle treks in the best possible way without weighing down your system.

  1. Protect yourself from the rain…

Before planning a trek it’s good practice to check the weather and be prepared for any eventuality. It’s always best to have a waterproof jacket in your rucksack, ready to take out in the event of rain or thunderstorms.

  1. … and the sun

The sun too can create problems: never forget to take sunscreen, a hat to protect your head and a pair of sunglasses with protective lenses and impact-resistant frames.

  1. You can never be too prudent

A thermal blanket, a flashlight and a whistle are tools you probably won’t use but are always good to have with you.

Every trekker knows the secrets of dressing in layers (light and breathable clothing, perhaps opting for garments made with Dryarn®) but sometimes you can take the wrong route, lose your orientation and find yourself walking after nightfall. If this happens a flashlight is essential to be able to move around safely and, should you have to wait for help, it’s really useful to have a thermal blanket to maintain your body temperature while stationary and a whistle to help others locate you.

  1. First aid kit

You should never be without one of these, even for the easiest trek. A first aid kit can also come in handy for treating minor injuries like abrasions, bruises or small cuts.

  1. Multi-purpose tool

As its name implies this has an amazing number of different uses. You can use it to cut gauze, open a bottle, slice bread, cut twigs, tighten spectacle frames, remove splinters and much more… a must-have item in any trekker’s kit!
