THE BEST-LOVED GLACIERS FOR SKIING IN EUROPE

17/12/2019

With breathtaking landscapes and fresh snow, here are the best-loved glaciers for skiing not only in winter but also in the spring and summer, offering a unique experience.

1) Cervinia and Zermatt: the Valle d’Aosta locality is a very popular destination for ski lovers, linked to its Siamese twin across the border in Switzerland. There are 20 km of trails and a large snowpark merging into the Swiss resort of Zermatt, where you can ski at 3900 metres above sea level.

2) Les Deux Alpes: an ideal resort for people who love skiing but also want a wide range of fun activities. There are pedal go-kart tracks, tennis courts and a golf course – all in addition to the skiing, naturally. A 30-minute car drive from Les Deux Alpes takes you to La Grave/La Meije, a paradise for winter freeriding. This is on a different slope to Les Deux Alpes but the glacier, which extends across the summit of the huge Massif des Écrins, is the same. There is no shortage of alternatives to skiing with trekking, glacier walks and paragliding all available.

3) Tignes: the twin sister of Les Deux Alpes, offers 20 km of pistes, a snowpark and a choice of various different sports to take part in, alongside a wide offering of daytime and night-time entertainments.

4) Hintertux: a resort in the Austrian Tyrol and one of the few places you can ski 365 days a year, has 11 ski lifts and 18 km of pistes. A visit to its ice palace and caves offers a fascinating diversion from skiing. At a depth of 25 metres beneath the glacier you can admire frozen waterfalls, ice formations and stalactites nearly 8 metres long. The limestone caves of Spannagelhohle are also near at hand, providing an excursion that’s available throughout the year.

5) Passo dello Stelvio: this Italian resort is unusual because it opens only during the summer. The main road leading to the Passo da Bormio is one of the most celebrated climbs of the Giro d’Italia and is in fact closed throughout the winter. The Stelvio glacier is the largest summer skiing area in the Alps.
