HOW TO CHOOSE YOUR REUSABLE WATER BOTTLE AND KEEP IT CLEANED

23/10/2019

A reusable water bottle is a must-have item for sports and in many other situations, the only durable accessory that enables you to drink abundantly throughout the day. It’s a convenient and ecological alternative to the mass usage of disposable plastic. Here are a few criteria to bear in mind if you’re buying one for the first time:

WEIGHT

As you’ll always be carrying the bottle around it mustn’t be too heavy, and it needs to be easy to carry and handle even when full. For this reason it should have a maximum capacity of about 0.5 – 1 litre. The bottle’s weight depends not only on what’s inside but also the material: plastic bottles are usually the lightest and the heaviest are in steel.

MATERIAL

Whatever material you do choose make sure that it doesn’t release harmful substances into the liquid it holds. This can be the case with some plastic or aluminium bottles, which in the long run give the water an unpleasant taste and smell. Stainless steel is the only truly safe material. This does not release toxic substances and is especially durable, though definitely heavier than plastic or aluminium.

MAINTAINING TEMPERATURE

If you want to keep the temperature of the drink stable for several hours the bottle must have a double insulating shell. Bottles made with a double chamber create a vacuum inside, enabling them to keep drinks hot for up to 12 hours and cool for as long as 24-48 hours. If you’re expecting to move around a lot and to subject the bottle to heavy use make sure it has a completely airtight cap, preferably attached to the bottle to avoid the risk of losing it.

USAGE

There’s a wide range of bottle types to choose from to suit your lifestyle. Water bottles for camping, for instance, are usually much larger because they don’t need to be carried around and their weight is of less importance. If you intend to drink infused drinks as well as just water you need to find a bottle with the option of an internal filter. Finally, if you’re looking for a product experience that combines ecology with technology you can choose from a whole array of bottles that light up or notify you when it’s time to take a drink based on your eating or sporting habits.

DESIGN

This is not just a matter of aesthetics but also of practicality. A hook or handle to hold the bottle in one hand is very useful, for example, or a practical cap that is quick to open and close. And to make life even easier you can even find self-cleaning water bottles. As for the look, the choice is almost limitless: as well as having a vast array of colours, designs and patterns available you can also personalise the casing with prints or engravings.

Don’t forget that…

Water bottles should always be looked after with great care, and this means frequent cleaning. Never leave the bottle in the hot sun and never forget to clean the cap, neck or other parts that frequently come into contact with the mouth. Before you buy it’s important to know how to keep the bottle clean and sanitised, to prevent harmful bacteria from entering the body. The bottle should be cleaned every day. Just rinsing it under the kitchen tap isn’t enough to eliminate fungi, mould and bacteria: each time you refill the bottle it’s good practice to give it a thorough wash. How?

Washing

– in the dishwasher;

– with hot water and a drop of detergent;

– with vinegar or baking soda;

– with a specifically made bottle brush;

Rinsing and drying

It’s important to rinse the bottle thoroughly in hot water and to leave it and the cap to dry separately, so that the water can drain away and help the bottle to dry completely.
