Interview to Paola Giacomini who will cross Asia and Europe by horse

Paola will be leaving in a few days’ time on a 500-day trip from Mongolia to Krakow. In this interview she tells us how her adventure was first conceived: in a sea of grass.

We’ll be following Paola throughout her incredible journey, don’t  miss any updates!

Paola, how was your adventure first conceived?

This adventure was first conceived reading a book. When I travel I always take a book with me, and the longer the journey the more I end up re-reading it. The book that inspired this journey is “In Mongolia in Retromarcia” (to Mongolia in reverse). The great steppes of Asia and the high pastures of the Apennines recounted in the stories fused in an instant with the paddock in Cantabria where my mare was grazing. This was the seed of my idea.

In the saddle for 500 consecutive days, crossing Asia and Europe. What frightens you most about this journey?

The thing that frightens me most is the bureaucracy, I’ve been battling with it since October and I’ll encounter it on the way plenty of times. The only way to beat it, unfortunately, is to meet it head-on. There’s no other solution.

What will have changed when you arrive in Krakow?

I’ll definitely have a lot more white hair! Apart from that, I think the planet will continue to turn from east to west.
