Interview with the Italian volleyball player Gabriele Maruotti

01/12/2016

In order to continue our wonderful journey with the authentic stories told through the eyes of those who live their sport every day, today we are going to introduce Gabriele Maruotti .

We asked him some information about proper diets for sports, and some suggestions for those who want to undertake sports activities following a balanced diet.

  • Which is the ideal diet for those who do sport?

I am convinced that a proper diet is fundamental for living a healthy life, especially for those who do sports activities. Hearing  people talking about diets may shivers down the spine of many, but having a proper diet does not mean eating only fruits and vegetables, but having a balanced intake of fats, proteins and carbohydrates.

  • Which is the ideal menu for a person who usually do sport?

Establishing  a proper diet depends on many factors. At first, we need to consider the kind of activity and how often it is done. Then we take into account the relationship between fat and fat-free mass and body hydration. Each sports activity and each person have their own needs to take into consideration.

  • How about the food that athletes should avoid?

Athletes should avoid carbonated drinks, in particular those full of sugars,  sweet snacks and “trash food”. I personally have a rich breakfast.  Are you ready? Scrambled eggs with avocados, some fruit, a cup of yogurt with oat flakes and I usually enjoy a chocolate chip one,   3-4 pieces of nuts and some coffee. I know, it is just a breakfast, but it is the most important meal of the day!

  • Athletes need their right inputs of nutrients: how to guarantee a complete balanced diet?

For those who do sports very often, nutrition plays its important role.  Often taking the right doses of proteins, for example,  becomes complicated only with a balanced diet.

We should eat 4 steaks each day and it may cause problems for liver and digestion. Supplements have the same function, but they are lighter and easier for the metabolism to absorb.

Be careful to the kind of supplements to use and seek the advice of experts. Sometimes prices are not so different between poor quality products and optimum ones, but quality is the main difference.

Conclusions:

Nutrition is not important only to give energy to our body, but also to accelerate recovery from physical stress.

The last thing: it is important having a balanced diet, trying not to exaggerate, but sometimes make an exception to the rules and enjoy a good meal! Exceptions are ideal for respecting the rules for a long period.
