5 TIPS ON HOW TO APPROACH THE WORLD OF ROCK CLIMBING SAFELY

09/10/2020

Rock climbing has always been one of the best loved and most popular outdoor sports, and October is the perfect month for climbing even though temperatures are beginning to fall.

There are wonderful places and breathtaking landscapes in which to climb (we have talked about them here!) – an activity that, for all its appeal, can seem extremely complicated to learn for non-experts. However, it is easier than it might appear and offers beginners unique and thrilling experiences.

Here is some advice from sportoutdoor24.it on how to approach the world of rock climbing safely.

Start in an indoor gym – with an instructor!

The best, safest and fastest way to learn a new sport is to put yourself in the hands of an expert. Who better than an instructor to teach the right technique to use and give valuable feedback on mistakes? In addition, to begin with, it is better to take your first steps in the gym. In this way, you won’t run into poor weather conditions or tackle walls that are too difficult for a novice, which might put you off the sport.

Learn climbing terminology

Like all disciplines, climbing has its own specific vocabulary. It is vital to learn it so that you can communicate easily and quickly with your companions.

Set up a climbing group

It might seem trivial but it isn’t. Climbing is a sport with a strong sense of community, which should not be undertaken alone. It is important to always have at least one companion to help you and keep you safe breaking any accidental fall.

Do not trust other people (too much!)

This seems a contradiction. Although climbing is a sport that is good to do in a group, one of the fundamental rules is to learn techniques to perfection to ensure you keep yourself safe. Practising them again and again without relying solely on your companions can prevent unpleasant incidents.

Practise climbing on cliffs

Climbing outdoors is very different from in the gym. Climbing is a sport born in the open air and starting to do it in contact with nature will be a unique experience. In this instance also, if you are a novice, it is good to use an approved mountain guide to teach you how to climb on cliffs.

This is why it is worth considering a sport as fascinating and comprehensive as climbing:
