On the Trails of the Glaciers

07/04/2020

We have recently become aware of a project that all mountain lovers will adore. It is called Sulle Tracce Dei Ghiacciai (On the Trails of the Glaciers) (www.sulletraccedeighiacciai.com) and is a photographic science project by Fabiano Ventura in which photographers and scientists help to combine photographic comparisons and scientific research to analyse the effects of climate change, starting with observations of changes to glacial formations.

Up to this point in time the project has analysed 25 glaciers across the world’s most important mountain ranges including the Karakorum, the Caucasus, Alaska, the Andes and the Himalayas, using 74 photographic comparisons and 6 research programmes.

For each expedition the project involves the repetition of photographs taken from the same observation point and at the same time of year as those taken by photographers-explorers in the late 19th and early 20th century. The aim is to use visual communication to develop an ever-greater awareness of the impact that anthropic activities have on the climate.

“We are working – says Fabiano Ventura – to encourage the spread of a higher ecological awareness. We use photographic comparison as an instrument to combine the communicative power of pictures with the rigour of historic and scientific research. The images, which bear witness to the shrinking of the Earth’s largest mountain glaciers, will, together with the scientific data collected, provide an immediate impression of the extraordinary climatic changes that our planet is undergoing and will confirm the urgency of all possible actions to limit their consequences”.
