SKI MOUNTAINEERING: 3 TIPS FOR A PERFECT JOURNEY ON THE SNOW

22/03/2024

The abundant snowfall of recent weeks has lengthened the potential for winter sports by at least a month, and certainly for ski mountaineering if not skiing itself.

You must be careful, however: given the sudden rise in temperatures you must be alert to the danger of avalanches which are frequently caused by the melting snow, and you must also have the right equipment.

Here are 3 tips for a perfect journey on the snow.

  1. The key point is to choose the route of your journey based on your abilities, and to always check the AINEVA bulletin (interregional association for the coordination and documentation of problems related to snow and avalanches). It’s also important to be able to recognise your own psycho-physical abilities and those of the other participants on the journey, enabling you to select the most suitable route and minimise the risks.
  2. Equally important is nutrition. Before the climb it’s important to have a good breakfast with plenty of carbohydrates and the addition of some protein. To prevent energy dips and maintain stable glucose levels it’s advisable to take snacks – about every thirty minutes – including pistachios, dark chocolate and protein bars. It’s also very important to stay hydrated, so you should always carry water and energy drinks in your backpack. As for restoring lost energy, it’s preferable to consume protein, healthy fats and fibre within one hour of the end of the journey to maximise the benefits of the meal.
  3. Equipment. As well as the three essential devices (artva, shovel and probe) it’s advisable to take a GPS in your backpack. This will allow you to be tracked if anything happens, and a satellite communicator is also recommended if you need to send out an SOS in the absence of a signal. Still on the subject of ski mountaineering, another element that’s far from irrelevant is the right choice of clothing: it’s advisable to go for thermal, lightweight and breathable garments that adapt to the frequent changes in temperatures that typify the first days of spring.

In short, enjoy this last month of adventure, but always safely and wearing the right clothes!
