How to run on the snow: an orthopaedist’s advice

15/01/2018

Cold and snow will never be enough to hold back people who love mountain running or walking… but be careful, because the risks for your feet multiply during the winter!

Technical clothing is imperative, and you need to pay much more attention to your choice of shoes. In addition, a few tricks of the trade can avoid risky situations: for example take more time to warm up, choose a well-known route, shorten your stride, stay wary when tackling conditions on the ground.

Running or walking on the snow may be tiring but it’s also fun, exciting and evocative. The important thing is to be careful! And if you do happen to slip, don’t worry… it’s true that sprains  occur frequently in conditions that make movement difficult, but you can always take the right precautions. Rest, apply some ice and choose a good brace, or seek professional help with bandaging. In more serious cases, go to the doctor for a more in-depth examination.

I’m always on the side of people who practise sports because regular physical activity is important for psycho-physical equilibrium and general well-being. It’s essential, however, that any problems affecting the feet are dealt with in such a way as to restore the patient to his or her normal activities as effectively and as quickly as possible.
