At almost 80 years old, Marco Olmo continues to run, driven by passion and the desire to challenge himself. The ultra-marathoner, a symbol of extreme running, will once again tread the African sands from October 5th to 12th, taking part in the 100 Km of the Sahara. This is a stage race designed for those who wish to experience the desert in an accessible but authentic way.
“There are five stages: 30, 25, 20, 15, 10 km. A total of 100 km. One runs with a water bottle or with nothing, depending on the climate and supplies. No backpack: much simpler than the Marathon des Sables,” Olmo explains.
The race takes place in an “organized camp” mode: no nights spent outdoors; one sleeps in beds, eats in a tent, and experiences the desert as an immersive event, with lighter logistical support. The goal? To offer a first taste of extreme races.
“It’s a race that has launched many people towards the Marathon des Sables. The landscape encourages one to run. If, like me this time, you go to participate, and not to win, it’s even easier to enjoy it.”
Marco does not change his method: in August and September, he will add some “long runs” of two or two and a half hours, keeping his program of two-hour races and regular outings intact.
“I do what I can and I commit myself fully. Otherwise, I would not wear the number. My diet? Some gels and water, as usual. I am not seeking a result: I continue to run because I like it.”
Marco Olmo does not run to stand on the podium, but for the pure joy of movement. And his philosophy is clear, sincere, and universal.
“Unlike professionals, being an amateur, I run for pleasure. I am not ashamed and I accept what comes. The important thing is to continue to move throughout life. When young, it is easy; then it becomes a challenge. I love challenges.”
The 100 Km of the Sahara is a race for those who want to start, but also for those who, like Marco, have not stopped loving the desert. With 5 stages spread over 8 days (one per day, plus a rest day), it offers an accessible but evocative format. One runs lightly, often with only a water bottle in hand, and sleeps comfortably in an equipped camp.
From October 5th to 12th, among the dunes, we will once again see Marco Olmo doing what he loves most: running free, without expectations, but with heart. An example that reminds us that the true challenge is not to win, but to continue.
