SKIING IN THE SNOW

22/01/2024

Can you ski while it’s snowing? For experts and beginners alike, the answer is (almost) always a big “Yes”!

Although it might seem more difficult or even risky, skiing in the snow creates a number of favourable conditions, especially if you’re a beginner.

It’s true, visibility levels are different, sometimes reduced, and you need to pay more attention than usual to complex routes and movements.

On the other hand, these conditions also bring with them a series of advantages that can help improve the technique of experts and boost learning for beginners.

Firstly, during a snowfall, the pistes have a layer of fresh snow that inevitably creates friction with the skis, slowing down the descent. This results in safer conditions on the slopes.

What’s more, when it’s snowing the slopes and ski lifts  are likely to be less crowded: a double advantage for skiers. More expert skiers are able to spread their wings and enjoy a better skiing experience, while beginners are able to tackle their descents in a calmer, more relaxed way.

When skiing under falling snow it’s best to take two important allies with you: a helmet instead of a hat, and a mask. The former gives protection against falls and the cold without becoming drenched in snow, while the latter gives you a better view of the pistes without getting your face wet. Be careful, though, to never to take off your mask during a descent: a “fogged-up lens” is an ever-present risk!

One last advantage of skiing in snowfall?

The breathtaking landscape, the whiteness of the snow-capped trees, and the stillness, silence and feeling of peace that only the snow can give.
