THE VERDON GORGE: 3 SPORTS TO DO IN A BREATHTAKING PLACE

24/08/2022

Who ever said you have to travel to the other side of the world for picture-postcard landscapes? Much closer than you might think, a corner of paradise lies in wait for anyone with an adventurous soul and a love of nature: the Verdon gorge.

Situated in Provence, the gorge extends for about 25 km, with vertical drops of up to 1,500 m, and is considered to be the largest canyon in Europe. It was formed by the Verdon river which, carving its way downstream for millennia, created this jewel of nature.

As well as offering a myriad of unmissable sights, the Verdon gorge is also a great holiday destination for sports and adventure lovers.

Here are 3 sports that can be practised in Europe’s largest canyon.

  • Trekking is, of course, a perfect activity for setting like this. A very popular trail is the GR4, which winds from Point Sublime (one of the canyon’s most evocative panoramic viewpoints) down to the bottom of the gorge. It takes about 2 days to complete the trail, although the fittest athletes can take less. Less demanding routes include the Couloir Samson trail – which can be completed in only 2 hours – and the spectacular Martel trail – which is 15 km long and can be walked in about 6 hours.

  • Water sports. The River Verdon is a paradise on Earth for lovers of water sports. There’s something for everyone: canyoning in the crevasses, rafting, canoeing, hydrospeed with a board and even mountain biking in the water. The emerald colour of the water, which is truly unique, also makes water sports in the Verdon gorge a real must-have experience, meaning that there is considerable crowding in the high season.

  • Finally, a section dedicated to cycling enthusiasts can’t be overlooked. Cycling through the gorge is an unforgettable experience for everyone who tries it. A popular trail, offering unique views of the canyon’s sheer precipice, is the Corniche Sublime.

As well as equipment for your favourite sport don’t forget to bring your camera, to keep forever your images of an unforgettable adventure and nature holiday!
