3 JUNE, BICYCLE WORLD DAY. THE MOST POPULAR SPORTS ON TWO WHEELS
Invented in 1817, the bicycle has revolutionised the world of mobility and, over the years, has spawned several sports that are now among the world’s most popular and widely enjoyed. An invention of such importance that it merits its very own world day, established by the General Assembly of the United Nations on April 12, 2018 and celebrated every year on 3 June.
What are the most popular sports on two wheels? We’ve put together a list of 6 disciplines in which bikes play the starring role!
- Mountain biking
The perfect activity for all lovers of adrenaline sports. It involves cycling along uneven tracks and pathways, sometimes up and down gradients of varying steepness.
2. BMX
An extreme sport involving jumps and acrobatics that can be performed from different heights and surfaces. All you need to try this sport is a small, specifically designed bike and a fair bit of courage. BMX cycling takes place on specially arranged routes that include obstacles and uphill, downhill and jumping sections.
3. Cyclocross
Cyclocross, or also called cross-country cycling, is the perfect sport for anyone who loves competitive and group sports. It’s especially worth doing in the winter while waiting for competitive road cycling to resume.
4. Bike polo
Bike polo is a fun team sport with the same rules as polo on horseback, using bicycles instead. A fun and dynamic sport played by three or two players per team.
5. Bikejoring
Or more frequently canicross, the perfect sports to enjoy together with your dog. We discuss this here.
6. Downhill
A kind of mountain biking pursued mainly in the mountains, in the spring and summer, along steep and uneven paths and descents. People usually load their mountain bikes onto a chairlift to climb the mountain and then cycle down what can often be steep descents.
