GOLF: WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW TO GET STARTED

13/03/2024

Spring is just around the corner and, as the temperature rises, the outdoor sports season is back. Of the many outdoor disciplines worth a mention is golf, a well known and widely played sport with an ancient history and a wealth of fascinating aspects to explore.

Golf is an acronym for Gentleman Only Ladies Forbidden. This sport was in fact initially only for men, with access to the playing area denied to the female public. In 1893, however, the Ladies’ Golf Union was formed, an association that included women in this discipline for the first time and made golf truly a sport for all.

One of the motherlands of golf is undoubtedly Scotland, which boasts some of the world’s most beautiful courses which are cared for every day with extreme care and attention. Today there are countless golf courses to play on, many offering unique experiences and spectacular landscapes.

Competition, physical activity, and precise rules that must be respected are just some of the characteristics that make golf a fascinating but also very challenging sport. But that’s not all: playing golf is also a real cure-all for body and mind.

It keeps the joints and bones well trained and is excellent for heart health and the cardiovascular system. Playing at amateur level also positively benefits the brain, reducing stress and promoting the development of a rational and organized way of thinking.

But how can you approach playing golf for the first time?

A fundamental piece of advice is undoubtedly to find a driving range and an instructor in your area. You will not need to buy any equipment for your first lessons: the instructor will provide everything you need, including the driving irons.

A couple of lessons and some well-focused training will be enough to give you the skills you need to go on the course and fully enjoy the experience.

Like all sports, golf also requires some basic physical preparation.

Twisting is at the heart of the body movement in golf, so it’s advisable to warm up before training or playing a game.

While stretching you should not forget exercises like twisting the shoulders, pelvis and torso, which are very useful to help avoid nasty injuries.
