INTERNATIONAL DAY OF SPORT: 3 TIPS FOR PLAYING SPORTS IN A SUSTAINABLE WAY
On 23 August 2013, the United Nations General Assembly decided to designate 6 April as the International Day of Sport for Development and Peace: an event that aims to promote sport as a tool to achieve a better future for all and for the planet.
Sport not only has benefits on a person’s physical and mental health: it also strengthens social ties by stimulating competition with oneself and others, it can transmit the values of perseverance and commitment, and much more.
Sport is synonymous with inclusivity, it means joining forces in a team and fighting to achieve a common goal, all together: hence the importance of dedicating a world day to this activity and the social impact it can have.
The day falls on 6 April because on 6 April 1986 the first Olympic Games of the modern era were inaugurated in Athens.
On such an important day here are three ways we can practice a sport in a more aware and sustainable way, helping the environment through our own individual contribution:
- Practice more green sports like as trekking, yoga or plogging (link to the article? https://www.dryarn.com/magazine/natura/corri-e-cura-lambiente-con-il-plogging/). Also, above all with the arrival of summer, why not favour outdoor sports? More oxygenation of the muscles, more production of vitamin D, less stress thanks to the presence of natural light: how can you say no?
- Choose your equipment with care: second-hand is fine, or made from recycled materials.
- Wash… Responsibly! After working out many people spend half an hour in the shower, often in very hot water. Ideally, however, you should wash in lukewarm water for no longer than 15 minutes – or even 4 minutes according to the WHO, especially if you do it every day.
