HOW TO GET INTO SKI MOUNTAINEERING

14/12/2020

If you too are thinking of taking up ski mountaineering, get started by reading these simple tips.

Ski mountaineering is one of the most complete and spectacular outdoor sports out there, and if you approach it the right way will give you many rewarding moments.

This sport offers a unique mountain experience in the winter and springtime, thanks to the mysterious allure of the climb and the adrenaline-filled beauty of the descent.

But, like all satisfying activities, ski mountaineering isn’t for everyone and must be tackled with caution, careful preparation and a gradual approach. Whether you’re a highly trained skier or a beginner there are certain essential steps to enjoy this wonderful sport in safety.

The first is undoubtedly to consult a REAL expert. This could be either a mountain guide or a course instructor, but the essential thing is to start with his or her advice. There are lots of factors to take into account, so teaching yourself and getting all your information from the Internet isn’t the right approach.

The crucial aspects to consider are safety and comfort.

For a safe ski mountaineering trip you need to take a huge range of factors into consideration, including the snow and weather conditions, knowing how to handle the equipment needed (avalanche transceiver, shovel and probe), knowing how to ski on different terrains, and an ability to handle the types of emergencies that the mountains can present. The comfort aspect mainly regards being physically fit to tackle the mountain, your choice of materials (like skis and poles), and your clothing. When you set off on a ski mountaineering trip it’s vitally important to balance your layers. The most effective heat insulating solution can be to wear several layers of lightweight garments, trapping layers of air between the fibres. This is only feasible if the materials used are breathable, enabling air to move freely.

The video below gives 3 simple suggestions to help you start ski mountaineering – enjoy!
